JOINT INSTITUTE FOR NUCLEAR RESEARCH
26 - 30 June, 2006
LABORATORY OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES
2-nd International Conference
"Distributed Computing and Grid-technologies in Science and Education"
The Second International Conference "Distributed Computing and Grid-technologies in Science and Education"
will be held in the Laboratory of Information Technologies of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research on June 26 - 30, 2006.
The present-day advanced technologies generate the development of high-performance computations. One has to
operate with huge volumes of information not only in various areas of natural sciences, but also in industry, image transfer,
and communication. The Grid is a new conception that can integrate computer centers located at any point worldwide, is
recognized as the most promising tool to accomplish such computations.
The First Conference on this subject was held in the Laboratory of Information Technologies of the Joint
Institute for Nuclear Research in June 2004, it was the first conference in Russia devoted to discussion on the issues related
to the use of Grid-technologies and distributed computing in science and education. More than 200 people attended the Conference.
Delivered were 79 reports concerning the creation of Grid-infrastructures and the development of tools for functioning such
systems as well as the questions of solving applied problems on the created structures. The Proceedings have been published.
Now the Grid is progressing in three directions - commercial, academic research, and infrastructure developments
for specific applied tasks. Due to participation in European projects EU DataGrid and EGEE (Enabling Grids for E-sciencÅ), Russian
centers have gained experience of work with the newest Grid software within global grids. The Russian Data Intensive Grid (RDIG)
has been created as a fully-operated segment in the global EGEE grid infrastructure. Since 2003 JINR and Russian scientific centers
have been participating in project LCG - LHC Computing Grid - aimed at the creation of a global infrastructure of regional centers
for processing and analysis of experimental data obtained on LHC (Large Hadron Collider - key world-wide High Energy Physics project now).
For the elapsed time from the first conference, a significant success has been achieved in the implementation of
regional and local Grid projects as well as the projects elaborated in frames of an institute or a center, for example, the project
"Dubna - Grid ".
The basic purpose of the Conference is to discuss the development of Grid-technologies in Russia and JINR Member States,
to make plans for the further cooperation and to share experience of the creation of Grid-infrastructures. The Conference will provide a way
of discussion of newest results and to get into contacts for closer cooperation.
